Where it begins. Where it ends. What came before. What comes after.

But hidden within these questions is a small error in thinking.

Our thinking only knows limited spaces

Because every space you know has boundaries.

A room has walls.
A garden has a fence.
A cell has a cell wall.
An organ has a membrane.
A house has walls.
Even a computer has a casing.

Everything we understand as space is surrounded by something.

That is why humans naturally ask:

“Where does the universe end?”

But if the universe ends — what is behind it?

And if there is something behind it — does that not also belong to the universe? Or already to another universe?

And if there is nothing behind it — what does “nothing” even mean?

We are turning in circles.

Not because we are stupid.

But because our thinking comes from a small space and tries to grasp something that does not function according to the rules of our small space.

The universe may not be a space in the human sense at all.

Perhaps it is something that brings forth our very idea of space in the first place.

Time as a tool

And then comes the next great story.

Time.

We speak of the past.
Of the present.
Of the future.
Of minutes, hours, years, and centuries.

But if we are honest, time does not exist anywhere outside our description of it.

You can touch a stone.
You can drink water.
You can embrace a tree.

But you cannot hold time in your hand.

Time is an orientation.
An agreement.
A measure.
A tool.

A beautiful tool, admittedly.

But still a tool.

Nature knows no calendar.

Spring does not ask for the date.
Winter owns no clock.
The sun does not wear a watch with a second hand.

It appears.
It disappears.
It appears again.

And we began to count these movements.

From this, time emerged.

Practical.
Useful.
Helpful.

But not necessarily fundamental.

We do not live in time.

We live in change.

And because change is difficult to grasp, we gave it numbers.

Measuring is not understanding

We humans love numbers.

They calm us.

They give us the feeling that we have understood something.

But understanding and measuring are not the same.

A speck of dust could try to measure an entire garden.

It could calculate angles.
Determine distances.
Draw diagrams.

And still, something would always be missing:

the garden itself.

In the same way, we sometimes stand before the universe.

We are part of it.

Not observers outside of it.

And that is exactly why the relationship is so difficult.

How is a drop supposed to grasp the entire ocean?
How is a wave supposed to measure the sea?
How is a human being supposed to fully understand the universe if they themselves are made of the same substance?

Looking inward

And perhaps this is where the small, loving slap on the back of the head from the older brother comes in.

Not malicious.
Not arrogant.
Only loving.

Like someone who smiles and says:

“You little rascal. You are trying to solve the greatest mystery of all time while you have not even fully understood who you are yourself.”

Because there you sit.

In your own universe.

Your body.
Your mind.
Your thoughts.
Your feelings.
Your memories.

And even there, things already become impossible to oversee.

Billions of cells are working inside you.
Billions of bacteria are living with you.
Processes are taking place that you do not even notice.

Substances are transported.
Signals are sent.
Tissue is renewed.
The old dies.
The new emerges.

Day after day.
Second after second.

Without you having to intervene.

You are already a cosmos.

A microcosm.

A small universe full of order and chaos.

Full of construction and decay.
Full of life and death.

And even this small universe, we understand only in fragments.

Still, we turn our gaze outward and want to explain the macrocosm.

Wondering more honestly

Perhaps it would sometimes be useful to become still first.

To listen.
To observe.
To wonder.

Not in order to know less.

But in order to know more honestly.

Because the deeper we look, the more clearly we recognize something strange:

Everything changes.

Stars are born.
Stars pass away.
Galaxies form.
Galaxies collide.
Cells are born.
Cells die.
Thoughts come.
Thoughts go.

Nothing remains.

And precisely within that lies the true constant:

change.

Not as a flaw.
Not as a catastrophe.
And not as a problem.

But as a principle.

The end may only be a transition

Humans often call the end destruction.

Nature calls it space.

Space for something new.
Space for transformation.
Space for further possibilities.

The forest does not die when a tree falls.

The forest changes.

A cell does not die meaninglessly.

It makes room for others.

Perhaps the same is even true for stars.
For galaxies.
For universes.

Perhaps the end is never the end.

But merely a door we do not yet understand.

Humility before the whole

And perhaps somewhere, someone is sitting there, looking at us and smiling.

Like an older brother looking at his younger brother.

Lovingly.
Patiently.
With a grin.

And whenever we once again believe we have understood everything, there is a little slap on the back of the head.

No punishment.

Only a reminder.

A reminder that humility is sometimes the highest form of knowledge.

That wonder can be more valuable than certainty.

And that we may not be here to rule the universe.

But to be an eternal part of its great dance.

Perhaps that is enough

Perhaps we do not have to solve the universe.

Perhaps we are allowed to experience it.

And perhaps that is more than enough.

Warum wir das Universum vermessen wollen, obwohl wir nicht einmal uns selbst verstehen Du stehst mitten in einem Geheimnis.
